NY Times | Bergenfield, N.J.: Comfortable And Unassuming

In January, ice skaters in Bergenfield, N.J., descended on the idyllic Cooper’s Pond after it froze over for the first time in seven years. The arctic snap created another diversion in a suburb that keeps its children occupied.

Through the local recreation department, Police Athletic League, Little League and other groups, Bergenfield offers a groaning menu of youth sports. Halloween means trick-or-treating and a parade in the business district; Bergen County’s St. Patrick’s Day parade follows the same route. June brings a fishing derby at the pond and Family Fun Day in Veterans Memorial Park. Neighborhoods are dotted with playgrounds.
