Bergenfield Businesses Thrive for a Long Time

No matter where you go, you’ll find history around every corner

Bergenfield is a community where our residents and local businesses support one another. Families have been operating many mom-and-pop shops throughout our town for generations.

No one knows this more than Cindy Spoerl, a fourth-generation Bergenfield resident who is also raising her son, the fifth generation, in town. Her family has been active in the community through volunteering and emergency services for over a combined 425 years. As an owner of multiple businesses, her belief that “you get out of your community what you put into it” drives her efforts to engage with these organizations. Her family history and her own passion for Bergenfield is what makes her a strong voice as a Board Member of the Bergenfield District Alliance.

Bergenfield businesses integrate seamlessly with our local community. This is why publications like The New York Times have named our town a comfortable and unassuming place to live.

Don’t just take our word for it, though. Here are some examples of Bergenfield-built businesses that have been around for decades:

Matthews Diner and Pancake House

The Matthews Diner and Pancake House has been a Bergenfield staple for over 50 years. The diner was founded by six Matthews brothers in the late 1960s and has been a popular establishment ever since. Located along bustling Washington Avenue, hungry patrons can enjoy plenty of diner classics like breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, and classic American lunch and dinner items. Greek options like stuffed grape leaves, grilled eggplant, and zucchini chips are also available.

The diner continues to play an active role in the community today. Still operated by the Matthews family, the diner frequently participates in fundraisers and other charitable initiatives. Hungry visitors can find Matthews Diner and Pancake House at 430 South Washington Avenue.

Bergenfield Pharmacy

While large corporate pharmacies may have a wide variety of snacks, cosmetics, and knick-knacks for you to browse through, they cannot compare to a local pharmacy when it comes to quality of care. Residents know Bergenfield Pharmacy for its friendly staff, excellent service, and its small-town feel. When it comes time to fill a prescription or ask questions about medication, Bergenfield residents know that they can come to Bergenfield Pharmacy for a quality of service they won’t find anywhere else.

In business since 1939, Bergenfield Pharmacy is currently owned and operated by pharmacist John Grossano. He dedicates each day to sharing his extensive knowledge of medications with his customers. When it comes time to fill your next prescription, visit the pharmacy at 32 South Washington Avenue.

Broderick’s Flowers

Whether you are planning a wedding, milestone celebration, or another occasion where presentation matters, flowers can make or break your event. Broderick’s Flowers knows this, which is why they have been perfecting the art of floristry for over 60 years. Today, their mission is the same: provide exceptional floral arrangements to people in the greater Bergenfield area for any and all occasions. John and his staff are known for paying extra-close attention to their customers’ needs and consulting with them to make events come alive.

Need a floral arrangement for your upcoming event? Consult with John and his team today. Visit their retail location at 34 Washington Ave.

DeMauro Towing

In business since 1978, DeMauro Towing has helped safely remove disabled vehicles from Bergenfield area roadways for 40 years. The company prides itself on its friendly and knowledgeable staff of automotive professionals. DeMauro employees will examine your vehicle, see if towing is the best option for your situation, and if so, will transport your vehicle safely.

DeMauro operates their business from their headquarters at 35 Church St. in Bergenfield. Next time you need help, call for their service at (201) 385-6777.

Emilio’s & Francesca’s Hair Studio

Emilio’s & Francesca’s Hair Studio has been helping residents look their best since 1987. For over 30 years, Emilio and Francesca have been providing high-quality barbering and cosmetology services for men and women without the high price tag. Services include haircuts, nail services, waxing, manicures, and pedicures.

Patrons know Emilio’s & Francesca’s for their friendly greetings and excellent services. There’s a reason why people return regularly. Visit their location at 102 Washington Ave. or call (201) 384-9572 for appointment inquiries.

You completely left out Washington Garage which is 3rd generation and has been open in town since 1931

Thank you for that information. Unfortunately with Bergenfield being so full of long standing businesses, we were unable to cover them all. Also it was difficult to know the opening year of some businesses during our research. We would like to do a second piece featuring more family run businesses and their years of dedication to the community. I would like to put Washington Garage in that piece so please let me know if I would be able to reach out to you at that time for more information on the business. Thank you

      Hi Susan,
As this is the website for the Bergenfield SiD, we can only cover businesses that are in the SID. Thank you!
